makeup school la pat mcgrath

A self-confessed cosmetics nerd, Pat McGrath creates the looks for 80 major fashion shows a year. She’s had her work published in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and W, to name a few, and has worked with designers like Prada, Miu Miu, and Dolce and Gabbana. She’s also designed Armani’s cosmetics line and been in charge of Max Factor and Cover Girl cosmetics since 2004. Because of her success in the pro makeup industry, she is one of our muses at our LA makeup school

At Chic Studios, we take the expertise and knowledge of Pat McGrath’s legacy and cover it in our Fashion + Runway add-on! Our students not only re-create some of her runway looks, but they’re also given scenarios like working to create a uniform look and are timed to experience a real backstage setting.

McGrath has launched so many items in the last year, but here are some of the products that are super chic and a must-have in any makeup lover’s collection! We can’t wait to get our hands on these products from Pat McGrath Labs in our LA makeup school classroom!

LUST 004 Glitter Lip Kit

When she launched Pat McGrath Labs in 2015, the reactions to her first ever products were incredible. One of the first products was a glitter lip kit that completely sold out online and in Sephora stores. It was the perfect product to set off her collection since statement lips have become a beauty runway trend and phenomenon. Her collection comes in three sets: Flesh, Vermillion Venom and Bloodwine. Each set contains a tube of vinyl gloss, a jar of molten gold powder, a jar of glitter, and two complementary lipsticks. The lipsticks, on their own, have a lot of pigment and very creamy. Worn alone or layered with each other, they’re a perfect addition to any makeup bag. Pat McGrath states she “wanted to create the ultimate editorial kit that takes you from nothing all the way to the most extreme, jeweled, three-dimensional mouth.” Trends come and go, but nothing beats a stunning and hard turning lip!

LUST MatteTrance Lipsticks

This past summer, McGrath launched what may be the best matte lipsticks on the market right now. She painstakingly labored for years to create a formula that was intensely matte but wasn’t too dry and feather light. In her two decades of working in the professional industry, she knows what she’s doing! The Mattetrance Lipsticks come in 9 gorgeous shades (brights, nudes, and darks) and leave off a velvet finish and suitable for all skin tones. Each of the shades have a special meaning to McGrath; she uses colors that have been significant throughout editorial shoots and on her supermodel muses like Naomi Campbell (a deep nude lipstick in the collection is called “Omi”). To apply your lipstick like McGrath, she advises to use a foundation brush to brush on a light layer of concealer on your lips so you can get the lipstick’s true color. Then you can apply the lipstick directly with the bullet, lip brush, or McGrath’s personal favorite, the index finger and stamp on the product. Using light pressure, you should feather out the color on your lips so the lipstick looks more in and adapts to your lips’ natural lines and curves.

Mothership Eyeshadow Palette

McGrath is commonly known as “Mother” in the fashion community and she did not disappoint with her September makeup drop of three vibrant eye shadow palettes: Subliminal, Subversive, and Sublime. Each palette is packed with 10 intense and rich pigments, which are dense in color and creamy, but can look like melted metal when wet. It wouldn’t be a Pat McGrath product if there wasn’t glitter in it! 7 of the 10 shades are packed with flecks of iridescent glitter. These shades are buildable in their dry state and once wet, they’re so pigmented that you only need one single swipe. Like her previous products, McGrath has taken the time to formulate and create a perfect palette fit for beginners and experts. She properly previewed the life-changing collection backstage at the SS18 Coach show back in August 2017.  Before applying the shadow, McGrath noted that you should apply a light coat of oil-free moisturizer to make the perfect base!

Skin Fetish 003 Highlight

Out of all the limited edition products, we want this one to come back into stock! McGrath’s highlight kit, Skin Fetish 003, is the most sought after and internet breaking product in the makeup industry! The product comprises of a highlighter, available in two holographic colors, along with a dual ended highlighting stick. What makes Skin Fetish 003 so distinct is the fact that the stick is a translucent balm on one side and a creamy golden highlighter on the other. The balm is used for those who don’t want such a blinding glow, but instead something more natural. Don’t mistake it for vaseline! The balm is creamy without being too tacky and adds a hint of gloss. For max intensity, McGrath even included instructions of a three step system that lets you control how bright you want to glow. The product is multifaceted —  you don’t have to just use it on your cheekbones! McGrath has been seen on her instagram using the highlighter’s balm side to achieve a glossy eyelid (it’s perfect for adhering cosmetic glitter) along with perfectly pouty lips. The highlight kit of your dreams is currently sold out, but we’re hoping McGrath announces the return of it soon!
