All successful makeup artists had to start somewhere. Like most, they had humble beginnings working behind a makeup counter inside a department store or at a makeup boutique. Here are some amazing men and women who started behind the beauty counter before getting their big break. In our Chic Studios NYC makeup school, we put our graduates in an aftercare program called the Chic Pro Community where they are given exclusive access to events, shopping discounts, and job listings and opportunities. Recently, we've posted about being a beauty consultant for Nars and when our Sephora Hiring Fairs are coming to our studio. All makeup artists had to start somewhere, so we're excited to give our graduates a platform where they can research jobs and connect with our other graduates around the world.Read More
A self-confessed cosmetics nerd, Pat McGrath creates the looks for 80 major fashion shows a year. She’s had her work published in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and W, to name a few, and has worked with designers like Prada, Miu Miu, and Dolce and Gabbana. She’s also designed Armani’s cosmetics line and been in charge of Max Factor and Cover Girl cosmetics since 2004. Because of her success in the pro makeup industry, she is one of our muses at our LA makeup school!
At Chic Studios, we take the expertise and knowledge of Pat McGrath’s legacy and cover it in our Fashion + Runway add-on! Our students not only re-create some of her runway looks, but they’re also given scenarios like working to create a uniform look and are timed to experience a real backstage setting.
McGrath has launched so many items in the last year, but here are some of the products that are super chic and a must-have in any makeup lover’s collection! We can’t wait to get our hands on these products from Pat McGrath Labs in our LA makeup school classroom!Read More

Radios played Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Lilith Fair and Mariah Carey. It was the ’90s, and everyone was all about Oprah, Doc Martens and flannel shirts. Cellphones were a new thing, and email was just starting. And there was makeup to be worn. If you’re looking back to the ’90s, consider these five looks that are Chic Studios approved! In our Professional Makeup Artistry course, we cover the history of makeup and how it has changed throughout the years. For more information on our courses, check them all out here.
Dark liner, pale red eyeshadow and matte lipstick are required to bring back heroin chic. After applying foundation, line eyes with a soft black pencil and apply a light red shadow to lids, using darker red or brown to create depth. Avoid eyeshadows with an abundance of glitter of shimmer — ’90s grunge was more matte, giving off a sense of angst, unease, and a sleepless night of live music and post-performance partying. Dark red, burgundy, blue-gray or russet lipstick is a hallmark of grunge lips. Finish the face with a light application of mascara. Darken brows, brushing them upward or leaving them as is. This look is anything but precise and polished.Read More

This set of goodies joins the existing Jetsetter Palette in her first-ever beauty line. This is the perfect palette for our Chic Studios' NYC classroom!
The products in the collection fall into one of two categories: East Coast Glam, inspired by the NYC’s trendy vibe, and West Coast Glow, which combines a warm, beachy SoCal feel with the a touch of Hollywood glamour. To differentiate each category, Hadid accented her East Coast Glam products with silver lettering, and her West Coast Glow products with gold lettering.
