The recent runway looks in NYC, Milan, London and fashion hotspots around the world showed off plenty of hot beauty trends for winter that we teach at our Chic Studios Los Angeles makeup school. In our LA makeup school, we take the expertise and knowledge of these growing trends and cover it in our Fashion + Runway add-on which is included in our Professional Makeup Course. Our students not only re-create some of these runway looks during rotations but they’re given a photoshoot at the end of the course to jumpstart their professional portfolio. 

As a professional makeup artist, which ones should you know by heart? Here are some top choices:

When doing your model’s lips, think “perfectly imperfect.” One trend displayed by Giambattista Valli was the smudged lip in bold statement colors, but not too precisely defined. Diffused edges on the lips give a dreamy effect to pouty, pursed lips or show off thinner ones.

Create the Look: The trick is looking as if you applied the lipstick effortlessly, or as if your model has just been kissed and smeared a touch. Don’t use a harsh lip liner, and apply the lipstick with more natural blending strokes.

As they walked the high fashion runways, Milan’s models showed off bold, dark eyeliner during the glittering Fashion Week. For example, Prada’s Pat McGrath opted for blue and black eyeliner, while Versace drew bold, curvaceous lines along the model’s eyelids, sweeping out to the temples.

Create the Look: To get the Pat McGrath look, pair warrior-like hues of blue around the eyes with deep burgundy lips. Sweeping the eyeshadow all the way up from the eyelid past the crease will give it the voluminous effect. Layer this with a darker Kohl pencil and smudge. Then, bring out the eyes even more by using a soft white eyeliner on the lower inner lids.

These days, “minimalism” is not just a trending word thrown around by yogis and self-help gurus. It can be applied to makeup trends and makeup artists, too. Autumn/Winter 2017 fashion trendsetters focused on glowing skin and natural, well-groomed eyebrows. Check out the likes of Lanvin and Max Mara.

Create the Look: Highlight the skin with a dewy bronze glow. Then, offset this look with a pop of color on the eyes or lips. To bring out bare skin, contrast with dark clothes or really bold eyes.

While minimalism may rule in fall and winter, it’s okay to go all out and create the maximum effect of gorgeous lashes. Emilio Pucci and Chanel wowed the audience during their shows with a focus on doll-like, 60s-inspired mascara. Jason Wu showed off more blues.

Create the Look: Your mascara does not have to be as clumpy as some of the lashes that have been trending, but feel free to layer it on. Removing lashes after? use coconut oil, which is a great natural makeup remover. Have fun with false lashes this winter!

Victoria Beckham’s models were very on-trend with their feline, winged-tip eyes. She stated that she loves makeup that “looks like you haven’t tried too hard.” She tells viewers to choose colors that are warm and luxurious for the winter months.

Create the Look: Use soft tones on the skin and go for nude lips; then bring out the eyes. The moody look is achieved by using the perfect nude lipstick (lighter than your model’s natural lip color). Then flatter this with pink shades to create a fuller illusion. Next, bronze and contour under the cheekbones and hairlines. Lastly, finish off with a primer, dotted on the cheekbones and center of the nose.
